Mesoamerican religions

There were many deities in Mesoamerican religions that were closely connected to nature and its cycles. The feathered snake was a prominent divinity. The feathered serpent was worshiped as a messenger between heaven & earth. Its worship spread throughout Mesoamerica from Pre-Classic to Post-Classic. Temples were built to this divinity in cities such as Teotihuacan and Nahua.

Religion was an important part of Maya culture. It was an important aspect of Maya culture. It was also used to boost morale and justify war. However, religion in Mesoamerican civilizations was often more political than religious.

Greek religions

The Greek religion is one the most fascinating ancient religions. Rituals center around animal sacrifices, and a sense if community. Prometheia, a classic tragedy by the Greeks, combines both classical drama with lessons on Greek religion. While there are many Greeks who follow religion today, the Greeks were unique in that they often considered their own society to be outsiders.

The Greeks considered religion a way of living, and their gods very human. And unlike modern religions that separate the church from the state, the Greek gods are very real. Their stories may have been inspired by the real-life events that they observed.

Roman religions

The Ancient Roman religions didn't have one belief system, but a range of superstitions, rituals and taboos. This resulted in a religion that was less spiritual and more like a contract between man and nature. Jupiter, for example was the god, and the same as other Indoeuropean sky gods.


Romans believed that there were many gods, the majority of which were animistic. Animistic beliefs taught that spirits inhabited everything and that citizens were watched over by the spirits of their ancestors. As they grew older, deities representing abstract social forces were added to their ranks. For example, the goddess Dea Roma was the personification of the spirit of Rome, while Concordia was the goddess of harmony. The Roman equivalent to the Greek goddess Nike was Victoria, which was also the goddess Victoria.

Mesopotamian religions

The worship of gods was a key element of ancient Mesopotamian religions. They were often connected with various aspects nature. A few gods were associated with specific livestock and cities. They are believed to have humanlike bodies and to react to their environment with emotion as well as reason. Their worship was motivated by meeting the gods’ needs. These included celebrations for birth, marriage, death, and other ceremonies.

The principal role of priests was to be intermediaries between the gods, the people, and the gods. Mesopotamia was eventually ruled by kings. These kings were instilled with semi-divine authority. However, priests were still the most important individuals in Mesopotamian society.

Indian religions

Jainism is an ancient religion from India that dates back around the ninth century BCE. This religion is founded in the dharma or morality of past times and focuses only on the consequences of one’s actions. It is peaceful and nonviolent religion that promotes the freedom from violence and the exploitation animal.

Indians hold many different religious traditions and beliefs. Although some religious beliefs cross over religion lines, most Indians believe in karma, the idea that good deeds are rewarded and bad deeds bring punishment in the next life. Seventy-two per cent of Hindus, Christians, and Jains believe that karma is true. The majority of Hindus as well as Muslims believe in some kind of heaven.
