Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born February 4, 1906 in Breslau in Germany. He was an active member of the Protestant ecumenical community and attended the University of Berlin. While studying there, he became interested in racial injustice and made many contacts that were important to the Confessing Church after 1933. He was also a key figure in the German resistance during World War II.

The Crusades

The Crusades were campaigns of faith, in which the Church fought for its values, and which aimed to save Christian territories and reclaim lost ones. These campaigns began in 1095, when Pope Urban II called the First Crusade from a town in central France. His declaration was that all penance would be satisfied by a pilgrimage from Jerusalem to Jerusalem. This appeal was both innovative and modern, as Christians were already fighting Muslims in faraway lands like the Iberian peninsula or Sicily. The Church offered only limited spiritual rewards to participants.

The Protestant Reformation

The Protestant Reformation was a period of Christian history that witnessed a significant change in church structures. The Reformation opened up the Bible to all people and removed them from the Roman Catholic Church's strictures. Protestantism also abolished the notion that you could bribe God with money to be saved. It was clear that Jesus was the only salvation, and that he died as a sacrifice for your sins.

Crucifixion

The crucifixion in Christian history was a horrific act of violence. Jesus was scourged by Roman soldiers and mocked for his claims to be the King of the Jews. Jesus was wanted executed at the hands of the Temple's high council. However, they needed Rome's approval before they could execute him. Pontius Pilate, a Roman Governor, found Jesus guilty by treason. He sentenced him to die. Pilate suggested that Jesus should be put to death, but the crowd demanded his execution.
