What is Spiritualism?

Spiritualism rejects materialism, and emphasizes the existence higher spiritual realities. It embraces all forms of spiritual belief, from ancient to modern. It is a form of metaphysics. However, it is different from other schools.

Modern Spiritualism

Modern Spiritualism focuses on inner journeys and is a form religion. It embraces ideas of the ultimate reality and envisions a life devoted to the discovery of the true nature of one's being. It is often considered to be pro-social in orientation.

Table-turning

The popularity of table-turning within modern Spiritualism dates back at least to the mid-19th centuries. It is believed that the Rochester rappings from 1848 inspired this practice. These rappings sparked an interest in electrobiology and animal magneticism. As the popularity of table-turning spread, scientists began investigating whether the movement was due to animal magnetism, spirit communication, or unconscious muscle action.

Seances

Many people are sceptical of seances and spiritualism. Skeptics point out that the phenomenon is not real and that seances are merely a form of pious fraud. There are many instances of people experiencing spirits through channeling, but there are some limitations. One example is the restriction on the use individual images.


Materialization

Materialization is the process by which spirits enter a human body to accomplish some purpose. This could happen naturally, during a haunting, at the command of mediums, or even in concert with another person. These phenomena can be suspicious, and in some cases mediums have feigned them. Materialization of flowers, for instance, was often attributed during the nineteenth century to a medium.

Millerism

Abolitionists aim to liberate slaves, discredit traditional marriage and sexual relations, reject Bible authority, and end slavery. They also seek to end political deference and the sanctity of private property.

Mormonism

Spiritualism is a form of Mormonism that shares certain basic beliefs. Both claim that the Lord Jesus Christ will come back to earth and set up a kingdom of God on earth. They also claim that the Bible is their source of revelations. In addition, both Mormons and Spiritualists believe that there are twelve apostles in heaven.

British National Association of Spiritualists

The British Spiritualist pioneers established a National Spiritualist Body in the late nineteenth century. Although they held several National Conferences in an attempt to create a National Federation of Spiritualist Churches, the meetings failed. The idea of establishing a national Spiritualist Union was published in Two Worlds in late 1889. A meeting of Spiritualists was held in Manchester.
