In the world of Shintoism, the kami (heavenly spirits) play an important role. They are considered to be a person's ancestors. They can visit the real world if they are honored through rituals and prayers. They can be found in the afterlife where they are said to be able recycle spiritual energy and live on into the next life.
Shintoism is a form of animism
Shinto's important feature is animism. It is the belief that spirits exist in nature. Shintoist temples are often found in natural settings. Rituals are often performed in honour of these spirits. Shintoism is animism that is grounded in nature. However, it has some unique features.

It emphasizes the worship and veneration of the kami
Shintoism worships the kami (or spirit beings). These spirits are associated with nature, and they dislike impurity. Instead, they favor uprightness, honesty, sincerity, and harmony. There are many types of kami. Most are associated with heaven or the earth, but some are human.
It emphasizes how important nature is
Shinto stresses the importance of nature, and the spiritual energy flowing through it. The philosophy of Shinto is based on the belief that the world and all human beings are healthy and well-balanced. It also believes that evil spirits can bring bad luck into the world. This reduces temptation. Also, bad actions can hinder the flow of life as well as the blessings of kami. The main texts of the philosophy are the Kojiki (712 CE), the Nihon-gi 780 CE, both which contain traditional teachings as well myths.
It emphasizes Makoto - sincerity in the heart
Makoto (sincerity in the heart) is the fundamental belief of Shintoism. This value is not a code of conduct but a feeling of sincerity in the heart that underlies all aspects of life and the world. Makoto is the foundation of all ethical thinking, from the fundamental principles of morality through to the most everyday of daily actions. The concept of Makoto can be found in all religions.
It emphasizes purification
Shintoism's most important part is purification. This is why new buildings get blessed before construction begins and new cars get blessed during assembly. Another common practice is the use of water to cleanse.

It is incompatible and contrary to Christianity
Shintoism and Christianity are incompatible because they promote different ideas about God. Christian doctrine holds God to be the creator of the universe and that He is the loving parent of all people. Shinto teaches people that they are fallen and have to be saved.
