Modern Spiritualism

Modern Spiritualism is a form of religion that is based on an inner journey. It promotes the idea of an ultimate reality and envisions a life that is dedicated to discovering the true nature of oneself. It is often considered to be prosocial in its orientation.

Table-turning

The popularity of table-turning in modern Spiritualism dates back to the mid-19th century. The practice seemed to be born out of the Rochester rappings of 1848, which sparked interest in electro-biology and animal magnetism. The popularity of table-turning grew, and scientists began to investigate whether it was due animal magnetism, spirit communication or unconscious muscle action.

Seances

Many people are skeptical of spiritualism and seances. Skeptics point out that the phenomenon is not real and that seances are merely a form of pious fraud. While it is possible to channel spirits and experience them in many cases, there are certain limitations. One example is the restriction on the use individual images.

Materialization

Materialization is when spirits enter an individual's body for any reason. This could happen naturally, during a haunting, at the command of mediums, or even in concert with another person. These phenomena are often suspicious, and there have been cases where mediums have faked them. One example of this was the materialization and emergence of flowers during the nineteenth-century.

Millerism

Abolitionists seek to free slaves, end traditional marriages and sexual relations, and discredit Bible authority. They want to abolish political deference and protect private property.

Mormonism

Spiritualism and Mormonism share some common beliefs. Both believe that Jesus Christ the Lord will return to Earth and establish a kingdom of God. They claim that their revelations are derived from the Bible. In addition, both Mormons and Spiritualists believe that there are twelve apostles in heaven.

British National Association of Spiritualists

The early pioneers in Spiritualism in Britain set out to establish a national body for the Spiritualist faith. They organized a number of National Conferences to form a National Federation of Spiritualist Churches. The meetings were unsuccessful. The idea of establishing a national Spiritualist Union was published in Two Worlds in late 1889. A meeting of Spiritualists was held in Manchester.
