Indonesian culture is a mixture of many religions. Central Java is predominantly Muslim. There are many Islamic and Christian universities located right across the street. There are also Hindu temples, such as Borobudur. These attract large numbers of tourists. In Indonesia, there are strong family traditions.

Islam

Islam is Indonesia's dominant religion. Indonesian Muslims tend to be Sunni. There's a small number of Shia Muslims who live in Jakarta and around 3% of the population, while 400,000 Ahmadi Muslims make up 0.2% of the population. Although 85% of Indonesians practice Islam, Indonesia is not a secular Islamic state. Only six official religions are recognised by Indonesia's Constitution. The majority of Indonesians identify with their nationality more than their religion.

Gamelan

Gamelan, an Indonesian orchestra playing traditional music, is its name. The orchestra is mostly composed of percussion instruments but can also include wind instruments and strings. The ensemble also includes dancers. The instruments are generally arranged in a specific pattern and include three types o double-sided drums, two-stringed fiddles and a xylophone.


Batik

Batik is a key part of Indonesian cultural life. It has been around for centuries and is known for its rich patterns that reflect the blending different cultures. According to UNESCO's definition of cultural heritage, it encompasses more that monuments and artifacts. They also include oral traditions, social practices, as well as the ability to make traditional crafts. These intangible cultural assets can be vital to preserve cultural diversity in the face and globalization.

Ramadan

Ramadan is celebrated by Indonesian Muslims in a variety ways. Megibung is the Bali ritual used by Muslims to welcome the holy month. The word gibung, which translates to "sharing", gave rise to the name. This ritual involves sitting in circle and eating together. The ritual has existed in Indonesia for centuries, and has been kept largely unchanged throughout the country.

Traditional games

Gobak Sodor (a traditional Indonesian game) is one of its most popular. It is a team game that requires the players to draw boxes on the ground and walk from one box to the other using only one foot. This game is also known as Galah Asin in some regions. It is still being played today in Indonesia at various ceremonies.
