The god Ares, the Spartan god of values, was worshipped by the Spartans. The city was home to a statue of Ares in chains.

Ares is the ancestor of the god Mars, who was the father of the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. While Ares was loathed by most gods he was loved by Aphrodite. Aphrodite preferred the handsome Ares, even though her marriage was to Hephaestus.
